The social media and the 2016 Philippine national elections

The social media has made a lot of Filipinos looking boldly assertive about their opinions. So bold in fact that some (if not most) have crossed the borderline of being rude.

Especially in the hotly contested presidential post in the upcoming May 2016 national elections, the Filipinos, in a brazen display of divisiveness, has brought their dissensions ever so boldly in Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

The most insulted group of presidential supporters no doubt, are the supporters of Rodrigo Roa Duterte, the Visayan-Mindanaoan 2016 Presidential aspirant, the well-loved Mayor of Davao City who transformed the city from a “no-man’s land” to one of the safest cities in the world based on the rankings sometime in mid of 2015.  I say this so because in fact, this is the only group of supporters given a unique label.

The supporters of the mayor are called “Dutertards”.

The word comes from Rodrigo’s last name, “Duterte”” and from the word “retard” which is a direct insult to the intelligence of his supporters (retard defined as: mentally handicapped and often used as a verbal abuse).

PHOTO 03: LEGITIMATE OPERATION -- Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte (left) stressed in a press briefing on Monday, July 15 that his shoot-to-kill order and the police operation against the kidnap for ransom group last week was legitimate and that he would protect and assist all his policemen involved in the operations. Rodrigo Roa Duterter, Mayor of Davao, PDP-Laban Presidential bet for 2016

The supporters of the Mayor, are perhaps the most passionate of all the supporters of the Presidential aspirants in this election. Say anything not so flattering about the mayor and they will get back to you with a huge list of the Mayor’s accomplishments in Davao and of course, this comes with not so flattering words against the person who made the dissension.

Just recently, a freshman UP student got the ire of the supporters of Duterte.  The video of the UPLB student made the rounds in Facebook and of course, the young man was called so many ugly names for being supposedly rude when he interrupted the mayor who was answering his question in a UPLB forum.  The supporters strongly believe that the manner in which the student interrupted the mayor was uncalled for, or simply put: rude.

The most common word being used against someone who dissents against the other in terms of political support is “bobotante”. This is directly translated as “dumb / stupid voter”, another insult of the intelligence of the one with the dissenting opinion.

The word “bobotante” is being hurled against the supporters of Rodrigo Duterte, Miriam Santiago, Jojo Binay, Grace Poe, and Mar Roxas. Make a mistake of saying your opinion about any of them, and their social media warriors are quick to defend their bets with utmost passion and ugly name calling.

The social media has projected a different persona of the Filipino. Bold, aggressive, argumentative, and quick to rebuke anyone who shows a different opinion than his own.

But outside the social media scene, the typical Filipino is different. He is typically timid and afraid to say his thoughts because he doesn’t want to hurt the other. He is non-confrontational and would rather keep his own opinion than start a debate. He is polite and conciliatory.  For him, the person is more important than his opinion. For him, being at peace with everyone is more important than asserting his thoughts.

What could have caused the Filipinos to be aggressive in the social media scene?

  • Could it be the supposed anonymity? I do not know you, you do not know me?
  • Could it be the supposed physical distance? We won’t even see each other physically.
  • Could it be the anger of the blatant corruption in our country? Even some of the presidential aspirants are accused of making dirty money out of their government posts.

Whatever the case may be, one universal truth remains certain. “A person buys from the salesman he likes. And no one likes a rude salesman”.

In the case of the presidential election, it can simply mean that convincing someone to vote for your presidential bet by calling them ugly names is definitely not the best method to win their votes.

All the best to our presidential bets.

In the coming elections this May, let’s all go out and vote!

The 3 best tropical fruits that will melt those fats, fast!

It’s all about calories!

Calories are the units of energy that the body needs to fuel your bodily function. Excess calories are stored by your body as fats. You wouldn’t want excess calories if you want to slim down or if you want to maintain your current weight.

If you want to lose weight, you take in less calories than what your body needs for the day. Your body automatically uses stored calories from your body fat to fuel your bodily function when it cannot access free calories from other source. This in effect causes your body to burn those fats! Too easy.

But who wants to starve? That pain in the stomach when you are starving? That stomach ulcer that happens when starving happens too often. Ugh. Certainly not I. Starving doesn’t feel too good.

So don’t starve. Eat a lot. Eat right.

Those Yummy Tropical Fruits

Fruits is the best food to indulge when you want to lose those unwanted flabs. You can eat a lot to your heart’s content without having to worry about getting fat. Fruits are high in fiber, high in micronutrients, and low in calorie. Oh, that’s heaven for me who likes eating a lot but who doesn’t want to grow too fat again.

Yes, I was obese at 180 lbs packed in my petite 5ft and 3in frame. But not anymore. I am now happy with my 125 to 127 lbs weight range. I lost all those 55 lbs without starving!

Today, I am going to share to you the 3 best tropical fruits that I eat a lot which helped me in my 55 lbs healthy weight loss journey.

1. Pineapples

This sweet high-fiber fruit consisting of multiple coalesced berries is absolutely heaven for those who wants to eat a lot without the guilt.  1 cup of fresh ripe pineapples is only 82 calories. Heck. I can eat 2 cups of ripe pineapples in one seating and be totally stuffed. Yet, I am only consuming 164 calories for that.

This tropical queen-of-a-fruit is uber delicious. Yummy! I love it for breakfast together with a cup of coffee and a piece of boiled egg.

Pineapples is not just good for your diet because of its high-fiber and low calorie content. This is also loaded with a ridiculous amount of micronutrients. It’s high in manganese, a micronutrient needed by bodily enzymes to work their wonders. It helps your body absorbs calcium and helps it form connective tissues and bones. And it also helps your body form sex hormones.

Pineapples also contains good amount of Vitamin B6 which counters skin problems and anemia; has high amount of Vitamins C, an antioxidant that helps your body fights off infections and diseases as well as protects the cells from damage. It also contains high amount of Vitamin B1 which fights off beri-beri.

2. Papaya

Some claims that Papaya is the world’s healthiest food. It is difficult to refute this claim as Papaya is packed with a lot of vitamins and minerals. It contains high amount of dietary fiber, folate, vitamin A, potassium, magnesium, panthothenic acid, and copper. It also contains good amount of Vitamin E.

The papaya’s dietary fiber is known to be able to bind colon cancer-causing toxins and flushes them out from the body. The papaya’s Vitamin A and Vitamin C contents help the body fights off common diseases such as colds, flu, and ear diseases.  Also, being rich in Vitamin C, papaya is fantastic in fighting off Rheumatic Diseases.

Papaya has high water content and dietary fiber content. This fruit stays in your digestive system longer causing you to fill full longer too. Consequently, you do not get hungry too easily and your craving for food is cut down.

This fruit contains even lower calories than Pineapples. It only has 62 calories per cup of ripe papaya cubes. Eat 2 cups of papaya for your afternoon snacks and you are only consuming 124 calories.

Compare that with 1 piece of Krispy Kreme original glazed doughnut which has 160 calories. That piece of doughnut will make you crave for another piece. And if you give in you are practically eating more than double the calories of 2 cups of papaya.

So have a cup of papaya daily (even two!) and melt those flabs away!

3. Banana

A medium-sized ripe banana which is about 118 g only contains 105 calories. Omaygulay! That is a total caloric bargain for a fruit packed with a lot of vitamins and minerals.

Eat 1 piece of banana for breakfast and 1 piece of boiled egg (100 g only contains about 155 calories) and drink a cup of coffee with 10g unsalted butter (74 calories) on it. Whoa! Your breakfast is a healthy 329 calories only. If you are on a 1300 calorie per day diet, you still have 971 calories left for the day. What a caloric treat!

The banana berry is high in potassium, a mineral that is necessary for the body to carry many of its metabolic functions. Potassium drop can cause your muscles to contract. And calling it bad doesn’t make it better.

But one banana a day, keeps the doctor away.

A few years ago while I was training a group of bakery staff in one of the franchise bakeshops of the bakery company I worked for years ago my leg muscles cramped and I dropped to the floor. I couldn’t stand up. Everything happened so quickly right there in front of my trainees.

I dialed our company nurse and I explained to her the situation. She told me to have someone bring me a banana. She explained that what I may be experiencing that time could be a potassium drop. True enough, a few minutes after I ate that piece of ripe banana, I felt fine again and back on my feet. Ah! The wonder that which is banana!

The banana is also high in Vitamin B6 which aids in liver detoxification, Vitamin C, Biotin, Copper, Manganese, and dietary fiber. Need I say more?

In Summary

If you are planning to load your grocery baskets with fruits, head over to the tropical fruits section. Fill your basket with the 3 best tropical fruits that will not only help you melt your fats fast but will also give you lots of those necessary micronutrients that will keep you fit and healthy.

And remember, one banana a day keeps the doctor away!

But if the doctor is McDreamy? Uh hum.

And hey. If you are interested to shed off your unwanted fats without starving and stretching yourself a bit too far, I wrote a book exactly just that.

It’s a book that will show the secrets of how I changed from 180 lbs to 125 lbs healthy woman. It’s The Asian Diet Secret. Visit me here.

On Manny Pacquiao and his being axed by Nike

Manny Pacquaio got axed by Nike for his stand about the gay lifestyle. He is being bullied, bashed, and whipped by many-a-local celebrity in my country who are members of the LGBT community for the stand he took on same sex marriage.

“Of Nike, whatever is their decision, that is there decision and I respect their decision.” – Manny Pacquiao

I see no issues about his stand. I support his belief. And I definitely, am not happy about Nike’s display of lack of respect on someone’s faith and belief.

I also support the LGBT community. It’s their life… their journey to take. It’s not easy for them too. It’s a long way to go for the fight to equality.

Imagine the bullying and the hate they had to experience growing up. Imagine the discrimination they have to endure throughout their lifetime. Imagine the hardships of pretending and keeping it to themselves to the point of dragging someone else to hide who they really are.

I still don’t know any of my LGBT friends who did not wish to be straight at one point of their lives. Who wants to be bullied?

I admire the courage of those who chose to come out. I also admire the resolve of those who chose to keep it to themselves.

I believe in God. And I believe in His perfection. I believe in the perfection of His design. I believe that everyone is born according to His design – straight, gay, lesbian, bi — these are just labels.

We are all born according to His design. That is not our choice. Our lifestyle is of our own design. That is our choice.

I am one with the thought that as long as we don’t purposely hurt anyone for the journey we take, we all have the right to live a happy life.

Let there be peace. Let there be acceptance. Let there be tolerance.

Tons of questions in my inbox

“Anna, PM me you secret. What did you do to get rid of the flab?”

“Anna, let me know what is your diet”.

“Anna, what food should I eat to remove my ugly and stubborn bulges in the wrong places?”

Yes, these are just some of the questions I receive in my Facebook messenger. I get tons of invitations too from random people who are curious of what I did to remove the unwanted fat and sustain my new self.

Of course, I always gladly responded. And for some, I even took the time to write down what food I actually ate. Those who followed the tricks I gave got  good results:

  • A friend lost 28 lbs in a few  months
  • Another friend shed off 9 lbs in 30 days
  • And the friend who shared another trick to me lost 8 kg in 4 months

More and more of my friends are reaping the results of following my tricks!

After a few months of contemplating if I should share the entire program to everyone, I finally did it. I completed the book that details my healthy weight loss journey and the little known secrets to melting those stubborn fats.

That weird trick that will transform you from fat to fab!

At last! You can now eat that steak and still lose the weight. I did just that! And I successfully cut 55 lbs (25 kgs) of unhealthy fat.

Enjoying delicious steak at Mamou’s BGC with my boss

The struggle was real

For years, I struggled from being overweight until I grew obese. I was unhealthy and was borderline diabetic. I had daily bouts with allergic rhinitis. Imagine the dread of having to sneeze almost every few minutes and having to regularly wipe that uncontrollable hot tears in the eyes that come with it.

Imagine the discomfort when the allergy escalated to a bad case of fever and colds. Whoa!

My fight against heartburn caused by acid reflux was a nightly nightmare too. It got worse that I had to sleep in a plain mat without any cushion.  And yes, I had to choose the hurt in my back than the acid reflux.

My woman cycle became overly irregular. It was as bad as having 4 cycles in a year only.

The obesity caused my self-esteem to be at its all-time low. I got bullied and called names – baboy (pig), balyena (whale), and dugong (sea-cow)! Yet I continued to paint a smile in my face. Talk about staying positive in the midst of the bullies!

Me in Star City in Jan 2014 wearing my then favorite pair of shorts

I could not buy the clothes that I wanted. None of them would fit. I couldn’t even wear my favorite pair of shorts anymore.

I tried everything I knew that can cut the flabs. I enrolled in the most expensive gym near my office and spent hours and hours in the treadmill. Heck, the expensive monthly subscription fee didn’t help me at all. I still continued to grow bigger.

Oh well, at least I had several photo ops with local celebrities in the gym. Haha.

In the gym with Jerico Rosales, a local celebrity

“Perhaps, I must be eating too much causing me to balloon”, I thought so to myself.  So I cut the portions of my food.  I even skipped breakfast. Yet I didn’t see any positive results!

I did something stupid

I must confess. I did something obviously stupid too. Because I was so desperate about my weight and my shape, I tried drinking diet tea. Damn! The tea caused my digestive system to be constantly at war. The john became my best friend. The pain in the stomach is too much. I stopped.

I was resigned to accept my fate. I was ready to accept that I will be big and obese throughout my life. After-all I am no longer a teenager. Perhaps, my weight is caused by the slowing down of my metabolism caused by my age.

Until my woman cycle went worse, I was put under the knife!

Waking up alone after the hours of being numb from the anesthesia, I was flooded with grief and self-pity. I had to do something.

Today, everything has changed

My friends couldn’t believe I transformed from flabs to fab. They have turned me into their fitspiration. I get tons of private messages in my FB page about how they can lose unwanted fat and sustain their new self too.

From being called uncomfortable and demeaning names, I am now appreciated. Oh yes, being called sexy, fitspiration, and inspiration – my self-esteem improved. I am happier now too.

Today, I am happy to share to you how I did it. I documented almost 70 pages of practical tips of how you can cut the fat while eating all you want. I wrote down not just one, not two, but several practical tricks that I used to transform from 180 lbs to 125 lbs.

Relaxing in the office

I love these tricks. These are practical, real, and easy to follow. You do not have to spend thousands of money in the gym. You don’t have to starve yourself. You don’t have to take that diet tea (or diet whatever) again!

I spent two months of carefully writing, reviewing, and rewriting so that I would not miss any important detail of how you can sustain a healthy weight loss journey.

I’m sharing to you “the exact 4-step blueprint that I used to lose 52 pounds of weight in 11 months… steal my exact plan to help you lose your unwanted fat too”.

If I did it, so can you!

Hack the secret now of The Asian Diet which melted my stubborn fats.

See you there.

How to get your Driver’s License in LTO

I finally got my driver’s license. Yey!

I can now traverse the Philippine road driving my own car, alone, and legally.

And finally, I can go out of town any time I want. I’m excited.

If you already know how to drive and want to drive on the road legally here in the Philippines too, getting your driver’s license is not too difficult. Yes, it takes a little bit of effort and some amount of money and you are good to go.

Step 1. Prepare your requirements. Below are the qualifications and requirements listed in the LTO website. When I went to LTO East Avenue yesterday, I brought with me my Student’s Permit and the original receipt.

  1. Must be at least seventeen (17) years old.
  2. Must be physically and mentally fit to operate a motor vehicle
  3. Must not be a drug user or alcoholic.
  4. Must be able to read and write in Filipino or English.
  5. Must be clean, neat and presentable (wearing of sando, playing shorts and slippers during photo-taking and examinations will not be allowed).

  • Properly Accomplished Application for Driver’s License
  • Medical Certificate issued by any licensed physician practicing in the Philippines
  • Valid Student Permit (at least 1 month old)

Step 2. Proceed to the Customer Service Section Get the driver’s license application form and fill it out correctly. Choose the right restriction code depending on what vehicle you are ready to get licensed for. Since I was out to get my non-professional license (I don’t have plans of making driving a living), I selected restriction code #2. This code applies to both manual and automatic cars. Since I drive a manual Toyota Vios, this is what I chose.

If you are driving automatic cars only, you can select restriction code #4.

The Customer Service Section will also give you the requirements checklist and your queue number. At the same time, If you do not have a medical certificate yet, the staff will refer you to an LTO accredited clinic which is jus also nearby.

Beware of fixers around the area. The LTO East Avenue main branch is plagued with too many of them. Get your license the legal way. It’s going to be worth it.

Step 3. Proceed to get your medical certificate The medical check-up is just a breeze. Nothing really happens there except that you pay P200 for the doctor to check your Blood Pressure and check your vision. It’s finished in about 10minutes.

Step 4. Go back to LTO and wait for your number to be called. LTO East Avenue is well-organized. In just a short wait, you will be called and your filled-out application form, student’s permit with its original receipt, and the medical certificate will be collected. The staff will validate your requirements and encode your details in the computer. Prepare to pay P167.63 for the application and computer fee.

Fees and Charges:

Application Fee Php 100.00
Computer Fee 67.63
TOTAL 167.63

Step 5. Wait for your name to be called for your ID photo.  Prepare to be called for your photograph. Practice your smile as you only have one chance to get your ID photo taken for a license that will stay with you for the next 3 years. If you are lucky, you will have a good photograph in your ID.

Step 6. Proceed to the review room. The review proctor will hand you a reviewer. The reviewer contains the exact questions you will encounter in the examination room, but not exactly on the same exact arrangement, of course. The same reviewer also contains the answer to the questions. Take advantage of this and read through all the pages and understand the questions and the answers.

The reviewers available online may help you but I recommend you just read through the reviewer that will be handed to you. It’s more practical.

Step 7. Take the exam. My reviewer was in Tagalog. I am not very good in Tagalog but because I didn’t want to be confused any further with translating the Tagalog into English, I took the Tagalog version of the exam.

There are 40 questions for the non-pro takers. LTO only need you to get 30 items correct to pass the test. I recommend that you sit next to the wall for you to have good vantage point of the traffic signs posted on the wall. These signs are going to help you answer the questions on the test too.

Do not even attempt to ask your seatmate what the answer is to #30. Your test paper is not the same as his.

Pray that your name will not be called to go back to the examination room after the test. If your name is called, that means you failed the test and you cannot take the test again until after one month. That’s pretty annoying.

So take your time when reviewing inside the review room and always look at the walls of the examination room for the answers to the traffic sign questions.

Step 8. Take the practical test.  If you have a car, you can use it for the practical test.  You can also use the test cars in LTO itself. I paid P250 for mine for the manual car.

The practical test is easy. The proctor will just want to evaluate if you can start the engine right, operate the clutch, the break, and the gas pedals correctly, navigate the steering wheel with ease, drive through a bridge, and then park the car correctly too.

Easy peasy.

Step 9. Go back to the LTO office to pay for your license. Once you are done with the test, go back to the cashier and wait for your name to be called. Prepare P417.63 for your driver’s license.

License Fee Php 350.00
Computer Fee 67.63
TOTAL 417.63

Step 10. Wait for your driver’s license. After you make your payment, you are now ready for your driver’s license and official receipt. Keep your driver’s license and official receipt together. The DL will not be valid without the OR.

Step 11. Take a selfie and upload your photo with your blurred DL on Facebook. And let your friends know you can legally drive now. Yey!

All-in-all, I paid a total of P835.26 to get my non-professional Driver’s License with restriction code 2. That already included the fee I paid for the car I used during the practical test.

If you want to use your car, remember that you cannot bring it to LTO unless you have someone with a driver’s license to drive it for you.

Enjoy driving.

And remember. Driving is a privilege, not a right.
