The benefits of walking

I’m back to my walking and jogging.

I found this photo in FB and it reminded me not to stop walking.

I am 3 lbs heavier now than my lowest weight when I was still following my sweet potato, vegetables, and fruit-based diet together with my 3x a week of walking and jogging plus gym visits.  Currently at 131 lbs, my goal is to be at 125 lbs by September 30, 2015. For my 5 ft and 3 inches frame, I just need to work out 6 lbs of unwanted weight in 3 months.  It certainly is very achievable.

In June 2014, when I started following a healthy lifestyle, I weighed 180 lbs (81.81 kg). I successfully got rid of a total of 52 lbs within 11 month. In that 11 month journey,  I made it to the 128 lbs mark. I surprised my friends, my family, my colleagues, and even my coaches in the gym.

I’ve cut my gym membership already since the month of June. The overwhelming traffic in Manila and the distance of Makati to Eastwood has prevented me from going to the gym regularly.  For the last 2 months of my membership, I was only able to go there twice. It was time to stop.

May and June proved to be difficult for me in terms of following my 3x a week of walking and jogging routine. I also started going back to eating rice. Wow. Dinorado rice is just so good. The smell of freshly cooked dinorado rice is too much of a temptation.  Working at the graveyard shift also contributed to the change of my eating habits. I’ve started eating spaghetti and fried chicken again from the house of the big fat bee. And add to that my love for the neighborhood doughnuts and cheese bread. Wow! I gained 3 lbs for the last 2 months.

It’s time to go back to good shape.  Last week I completed my 3x-a week of walking and jogging. It felt good. I went out to Pasig Mega Market and bought yellow fin tuna, maya-maya fish, apples, pears, and pineapples. I also bought vegetables in our neighborhood market.

No more junk food from the house of the big fat bee. No more rice. Ah, the smell of dinorado. 🙂  I have to say good bye to the neigborhood bakeshop’s doughnuts and cheese bread. It’s time to eat good food again. Fruits, vegetables, sweet potato, and fish.

I’m gonna make it. Onward to 125 lbs. Onward  to staying fit and healthy.

Let’s do this! 🙂

For the love of coffee

Coffee is super food packed with loads of antioxidants.  With just 2 calories per 1 mug of 8oz black coffee, I enjoy my fill of coffee everyday. I usually take 2- 3 cups of coffee in a day and no more than that.  I always follow the rule of moderation.

Black coffee on my breakfast.

I’ve found that adding 1 teaspoon of virgin coconut oil or adding 10 g of unsalted butter on my breakfast coffee,  gives this hot drink more flavor,  pleasurable aroma, and better body. Although the fat from butter and virgin coconut oil adds more calories to my coffee, I welcome it still.  It’s because 10 g of Anchor unsalted butter only has about 74 calories  and Cadia Virgin Coconut oil has 120 calories only per 1 tbsp.  These good fat cause your body to feel full and suppress craving for food for a longer period of time.

Coffee keeps me alert and awake at work too while the good fat from butter and/or from the virgin coconut oil makes my thought process more sharp.  Whether it’s brewed or instant coffee as long as there is no added creamer or sugar in it, I dig it.

Coffee at Krispy Kreme. And yes, I didn’t get doughnuts.

When I go out to the mall and want to relax for a longer period, I would go to the nearest coffee shop.  I would get my brewed coffee, black, with no creamer and sugar, and just enjoy it’s full flavor and aroma.  Drinking coffee while hanging out with friends makes the coffee drinking experience more pleasurable and fun too.

Coffee drinking is a force of habit that makes me happy.

Today’s dose of wellness: Porterhouse Steak at Mamou

It was my first time to have a taste of Peter Luger Steak House Old Fashioned Sauce.  My boss had this shipped all the way from the USA to pair with the porterhouse steak.  He explained to me that he only uses this sauce together with the porterhouse steak that he enjoys at Mamou in Serendra.  I am glad that he shared this totally tasty sauce with me during lunch today.

The Peter Luger Steak House Old Fashioned  Sauce we paired with our porterhouse steak during lunch today.

I love the sauce.  This 125 year old recipe from the 125 year old Steak House icon in the USA, has this spicy with horseradish taste that explodes with the tender and juicy texture of the steak.  It’s awesome. Plus this sauce is fat-free and has 30 calories only per 100 grams.  Totally healthy, you wouldn’t mind dipping the steak on it generously.

The porterhouse steak at Mamou’s was also excellent.  Mamou serves only dry aged USDA prime meat for their porterhouse steak.  Dry-aging causes the beef to lose it’s moisture and the flavors become more concentrated.   This dry-aged meat is still juicy when cooked but the taste is compounded several times compared to regular steak.

I’ve read several reviews comparing Mamou’s porterhouse steak with that of Peter Luger’s itself.  I haven’t been to Peter Luger so I cannot make the same comparison.  But definitely, the steak was fantastic.  It was the best steak I’ve ever tasted in the Philippines. The other steak that could come close is of that from Albert’s at Salcedo.

This steak is healthy too plus it only has 170 calories per 85 grams.  Totally worth it.

If you want to try Mamou’s famous porterhouse steak, you can visit them at  Mamou Serendra, 26th St Fort Bonifacio, Taguig Metro Manila Philippines (02) 856-3569.

A refreshing treat

Lunch today was an awesome treat from the boss.  He brought his management team in 2nd’s restaurant at Bonifacio Global City.

The food was excellent too.  I had the crispy chicken fillet fried in butter, some vegetables on the side, a slice of corn muffin, and lots of water.  Water is good for the health. It has zero calories, refreshing, and it flushes out body toxins.  What is better than that? 😀

Today’s lunch.

The waiter gave me vinegar for my dip.  I always prefer vinegar over any other dip as it makes body metabolism fast and consequently burns calories faster too.  The Tabasco sauce that came with my lunch today was also good and healthy.  It has 1 calorie only for every teaspoon, plus, it tastes really good.

“Anna, how’s your food?” the boss asked.

I rated it 10/10.  The chicken had the right crisp on the outside and juicy and tender on the inside.  The smell of the butter was perfect too.   The vegetables on the side were also cooked just right.  They all retained their crispiness and their individual sweetness.  I would also commend the baker for baking the corn muffin perfectly.  It had the right softness and crumbliness.

lunch

Me, the boss, and the management team.

I’m excited to have my own version of this dish over the weekend using a mix of coconut oil and Anchor unsalted butter to give the chicken it’s distinct crisp and buttery aroma.

I’ve lost a total of 46 lbs over the last 9.5 months since I started my healthy weight loss journey last June 2014.  From 180 lbs I am now down to 134 lbs.  My new food choices has definitely helped me with my journey.

If you want to try the food at 2nds, you may visit them at the  2nd floor, Building 1, B3, 9th Avenue, Bonifacio High Street, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City, Philippines.

Just keep on eating healthy and keep the stress away! 😀
