How fat makes you lose weight fast

You heard it. Time and time again you hear weight loss preachers tell you to remove fat from your diet. Fat makes you fat, so they say.

Time to bust the myth!

From being obese class 1 at 180 lbs packed in my 5 ft and 3in frame, I successfully trimmed down to 127 lbs. I lost all the 52 lbs of unhealthy fat in 11 months!

The 38.5 in waistline is gone. The 43 in abdomen is gone. From size 3xl I can now wear size small clothes again. Sweet!

Fat in fact makes you lose weight. And I am a result of that myth getting busted. Let me share to you 3 reasons why fat makes you lose weight. And yes, fat makes you lose weight the healthy way.

1 – Fat makes you want to eat less

The biggest chunk of nutrients that from the food we eat come from the macronutrients – carbohydrates, proteins, and fat. Of these macronutrients, fat contains the highest amount of energy. Fat contains 9 calories of energy per gram while carbohydrates and proteins only contain 4 calories.

This high-energy fat takes the longest time to digest compared to the other macronutrients. It stays longer in your body making you feel full longer.

Healthy fat leaves you feeling satiated and full. When this happens, your brain tells your appetite hormones to back off.

Our brains are wired to detect the taste and feel of dietary fat. So when we are eating low-fat food, it does not give us the same satiety as when we eat fat. But when we eat the right amount of fat, our brain activates the serotonin hormones boosting our happy mood.

Food which satiates us triggers happy hormones. Even better, when we are in our best mood, we don’t feel the urge to eat. And binge-eating is prevented.

How this diet secret can boost your confidence

I always like singing. Growing up, I used to lock myself in my room and just jam to the songs of Bee Gees, The Platters, and Sue Thomson. I sang to the top of my lungs. I didn’t care. Those songs were music to my ears.

But I stopped singing when one day, when I was 10 or 11, while singing a Bee Gees song, my father yelled “Hey Anna! Are you reciting a poem or what?”

Wow! I bet my dad was being playful. But that did not turn out right. It literally took the confidence out of me. I stopped singing. I thought, “Oh well. I obviously can’t carry a tune. If my dad thinks I can’t sing, I’d better stop singing.”

The truth is I didn’t stop singing. You bet, you can’t take away singing from someone who loves it. But I never dared sing alone in public. I kept my singing in my room or in the bathroom.

I joined the choir only because it helped me with my academics in high school. But I always had this lingering thought that I cannot carry a tune. So when I’m with the choir, I try to lower my voice so that mine would just blend and wouldn’t even matter.

I also wouldn’t sing in karaoke sessions. It is kind of a letdown because, karaoke hours are a regular past time here in the Philippines. I can sing a line or two, but heck, I would not dare sing a complete song. If I would, I would have nightmares of it. I just didn’t have the confidence.

My confidence level diminished further when I started to grow bigger and bigger. I thought I wouldn’t stop ballooning.

I became sickly. My woman cycle lost its rhythm. I had regular bouts of nightly heartburn and daily allergic rhinitis attacks. I felt physically drained.

The bullies got through me. And the ugly names they gave me during those years of being obese stuck in my head. I couldn’t shake those names off. The struggle was real

For years, I struggled from being overweight until I grew obese. I was unhealthy and was borderline diabetic. I had daily bouts with allergic rhinitis. Imagine the dread of having to sneeze almost every few minutes and having to regularly wipe that uncontrollable hot tears in the eyes that come with it.

Imagine the discomfort when the allergy escalated to a bad case of fever and colds. Whoa!

My fight against heartburn caused by acid reflux was a nightly nightmare too. It got worse that I had to sleep in a plain mat without any cushion.  And yes, I had to choose the hurt in my back than the acid reflux.

My woman cycle became overly irregular. It was as bad as having 4 cycles in a year only.

The obesity caused my self-esteem to be at its all-time low. I got bullied and called names – baboy (pig), balyena (whale), and dugong (sea-cow)! Yet I continued to paint a smile in my face. Talk about staying positive in the midst of the bullies!

I could not buy the clothes that I wanted. None of them would fit. I couldn’t even wear my favorite pair of shorts anymore.

I tried everything I knew that can cut the flabs. I enrolled in the most expensive gym near my office and spent hours and hours in the treadmill. Heck, the expensive monthly subscription fee didn’t help me at all. I still continued to grow bigger.

Oh well, at least I had several photo ops with local celebrities in the gym. Haha.

“Perhaps, I must be eating too much causing me to balloon”, I thought so to myself.  So I cut the portions of my food.  I even skipped breakfast. Yet I didn’t see any positive results!

I did something stupid

I must confess. I did something obviously stupid too. Because I was so desperate about my weight and my shape, I tried drinking diet tea. Damn! The tea caused my digestive system to be constantly at war. The john became my best friend. The pain in the stomach is too much. I stopped.

I was resigned to accept my fate. I was ready to accept that I will be big and obese throughout my life. After-all I am no longer a teenager. Perhaps, my weight is caused by the slowing down of my metabolism caused by my age.

From Fat to Fab: How I lost 25 kgs fast

The image of my obese and sickly 81.81kg-self back in June 2014 is still on my head. It’s still vivid.

It used to make me so awkward and lowered my self-esteem. I always wanted to lose those unnecessary fat, fast.

It was impossible to fit in the clothes that I want.   I wanted to look fab too but I couldn’t. I always had to settle with what fits instead.  I would end up buying slacks and blouses that I would outgrow in just a few months. Heck! In my peak, my clothes sizes were 3xl and 4L. Wearing those clothes made me look older than my age.

It was also a pain riding in the FX, a transportation in the Philippines where a 3-seat row is packed with 4 people. And those FX seatmates would look at me as if I caused everyone to be packed too tight causing their discomfort!

“Common, I paid for this seat too. Stare at the driver for packing all 4 of us here. Don’t look at me.” I always wished I could give them a little sarcasm. “Hello, were you not taught that it’s really rude to stare?”

It’s all a thing in the past now. I have successfully achieved my goal of shedding off 25kg of unnecessary fat. From an 81.81kg awkward and obese woman, I am now 56.6kg.  And my clothes size is no longer 3xl. It is now size small.

And yes, I’m more confident with myself now too. And happier.

Of course some of my friends and acquaintances would ask me what pills I took or if I took some special diet drinks and teas.  No way! I didn’t do that and I don’t plan to do that either. And so when I told them what I did, they are all too surprised.

Here are 4 tricks which I did to lose 25 kg of unnecessary weight and prevent them from coming back

1. Drink lots of cold water.  Yes. And I mean cold water not hot or lukewarm water.  It takes 9.5 calories more to burn cold water than its counterpart at room temperature. It’s a trick to make our body burn more calories for us even if all we did is just drink water.

I drink at least a glass of cold water in the morning right after I wake up. It’s refreshing and makes me feeling full. Aside from that, it hydrates and flushes toxins out of my body. All throughout the day I drink at least 6 glasses (about 1.4 L) of cold water.

2) Drink a cup of Zero sugar coffee with unsalted butter every morning.  I put 10 g of unsalted butter to my customary cup of morning coffee. Although I am not obsessed with what brand of butter that is, I have been loyal to Anchor Butter, a brand that comes from New Zealand because their cows are grass-fed. Haha. I support organic products too.

For only 72 calories all in my cup of coffee and thanks to the good fat in the butter,  I enjoy full-bodied coffee which makes me feel full for about 5 hours. Yes, with a cup of this mix, and at least I can last the whole of my morning without any cravings for other food. And I don’t feel hungry either.

But because I am a proponent of no skipping breakfast, I always have at most 4 pieces of 20-g pan de sal too. Or I would have a piece of apple or a small solo-sized pineapple for breakfast.

3. Eat veggies and meat for lunch.  The macronutrients – protein, carbohydrates, and fat –  are necessary for our body to carry its normal functions. Aside from their major functions, they are also needed for our body to absorb and use certain vitamins and minerals. That said, my lunch will always have vegetables and meat, poultry, or fish. And of course, I drink at least a glass of cold water with it too.

4. Eat lots of fresh fruits.  My favorites are pineapples, apples, banana, pears, and watermelon. They are a regular in my fridge and on my table. These fruits are high in fiber and low in calories. A cup (165 g) of chunk fresh pineapple for example only have 82 calories. And 1 large apple of about 223 g only has 116 calories.

You can eat until you are full without to worry about packing too much calories. And to top that, you would notice your skin will acquire a different kind of beautiful glow.

The results

Of course I did not lose all 25 kgs in a matter of 10 days.  I had to do it the right and healthy way. I lost about 6 – 9 lbs of weight each month in the first few months then it stabilized at around 5 lbs every month. I made it to 128 lbs in April 2015 coming from 180 lbs in June 2014. That’s 11 months from when I started my healthy weight loss journey.

You can make it too. Remember: Obesity is not a life sentence.

Why eating real food is better than exercising when shedding unwanted weight

It all boils down to burning calories, the amount of energy present in food. Our body can only do two things to calories. Either it burns it or store it. Not so fortunately for us, calories that are not burned are stored in our body’s storage system called fat.

To lose weight, we only need to use up more calories than what our body stores. If you intake more calories than what your body burns, you will gain weight. This is the plain, high-level formula of keeping your weight at the level you desire.

Exercise can speed up burning the calories, however, when you eat more than what you burn, you still end up growing bigger. The secret is to healthy weight loss is in eating real food with low calories and with the right nutrition.

The power of eating real food.  Unprocessed food, untainted with processed sugars, salt, and other chemicals — these are real food. Real food are filling, high in nutrition, but low in calorie. You eat a ton but for a small amount of calorie. That’s a total bargain.

Let’s take for example my favorite fruit, mango.  Ripe mango in its unprocessed form contains 26 calories only per 40g. Compare that with dried mangoes you can buy in the market which has 160 calories per 40 g. Drying the mangoes and processing it with food-grade chemicals increased the calories 6 times. Whoa! That’s a ton of calories in there, yet 40g of will not fill you. Plus the high concentration of sugar triggers craving for more food. More food, more calories, more calories that you need to burn.

You can eat 2 cups of fresh ripe mango which is about 200g and you consume only 130calories, 30 calories lesser than what you consume in a 40g dried mango. You enjoy a filling meal without the fear of taking in too much calories.

The right amount of calorie.  Your body needs the right amount of calorie to keep itself functioning optimally.  The amount of calorie that your body burns to support itself is called the basal metabolic rate. The right amount of calorie must be supplied and burned in order for the body to function properly and keep itself healthy. Therefore, you must not take less calories than what your body burns to function properly.

The crackers and water diet. Some dieters believe that eating only 1 pack of 3-pc crackers in substution of one or more of their meals will help them lose weight. What they didn’t realize is that 3 pieces (90g) of this crackers already contain 120 calories. This is 120 calories of food that will not make them feel full. In just a few hours, they will already starve and in need of more food. This would typically cause them to binge and eat more than what they need during their next meal.

Contrast that with the boiled sweet potato diet. You can eat 133g of boiled sweet potato for the same calorie value of 120. You eat more for less calories and you get good fiber and more nutrients. That’s a crazy calorie bargain.

Processed food increases the calorie value of real food 3x on average and decreases its fiber content plus, the nutritional content is typically replaced with synthetic nutrients. You have to eat more of these in-order to fill full and consequently, you shoot up your calorie intake more than what your body can burn.

It pays to eat real food.  You can eat more, feel full, take in just enough calories for you to keep healthy.

Determine your calorie needs. It is important to understand your calorie needs. There are a lot of calorie calculators available in the internet.  This one is what helped me cut down 52lbs in the 11 months of my healthy weight loss journey. In general. Exercise burns calories. But to make your healthy weight loss efficient, you have to eat food that makes you full, nutritious, and with low calorie. Eating real food surely helped me with my healthy weight loss journey. It will help you too.

The benefits of walking

I’m back to my walking and jogging.

I am 3 lbs heavier now than my lowest weight when I was still following my sweet potato, vegetables, and fruit-based diet together with my 3x a week of walking and jogging plus gym visits.  Currently at 131 lbs, my goal is to be at 125 lbs by September 30, 2015. For my 5 ft and 3 inches frame, I just need to work out 6 lbs of unwanted weight in 3 months.  It certainly is very achievable.

In June 2014, when I started following a healthy lifestyle, I weighed 180 lbs (81.81 kg). I successfully got rid of a total of 52 lbs within 11 month. In that 11 month journey,  I made it to the 128 lbs mark. I surprised my friends, my family, my colleagues, and even my coaches in the gym.

I’ve cut my gym membership already since the month of June. The overwhelming traffic in Manila and the distance of Makati to Eastwood has prevented me from going to the gym regularly.  For the last 2 months of my membership, I was only able to go there twice. It was time to stop.

May and June proved to be difficult for me in terms of following my 3x a week of walking and jogging routine. I also started going back to eating rice. Wow. Dinorado rice is just so good. The smell of freshly cooked dinorado rice is too much of a temptation.  Working at the graveyard shift also contributed to the change of my eating habits. I’ve started eating spaghetti and fried chicken again from the house of the big fat bee. And add to that my love for the neighborhood doughnuts and cheese bread. Wow! I gained 3 lbs for the last 2 months.

It’s time to go back to good shape.  Last week I completed my 3x-a week of walking and jogging. It felt good. I went out to Pasig Mega Market and bought yellow fin tuna, maya-maya fish, apples, pears, and pineapples. I also bought vegetables in our neighborhood market.

No more junk food from the house of the big fat bee. No more rice. Ah, the smell of dinorado. 🙂  I have to say good bye to the neigborhood bakeshop’s doughnuts and cheese bread. It’s time to eat good food again. Fruits, vegetables, sweet potato, and fish.

I’m gonna make it. Onward to 125 lbs. Onward  to staying fit and healthy.
